How to Download CommBank Statements as CSV or Excel

CommBank's NetBank lets you export transactions as a CSV file, but only from a desktop browser. The mobile app doesn't support it. Here's exactly how to do it, what date limits apply, and what your options are when you need data older than NetBank will give you.

Only have a PDF statement? Use our CommBank PDF to CSV Converter to extract your transactions instantly — no manual copy-pasting.

Exporting from NetBank (desktop)

You need to be on a desktop or laptop browser. The CommBank app doesn't have a transaction export feature.

  1. 1
Log in to NetBank at netbank.commbank.com.au

Use your client number and password. If you have the CommBank app set up but haven't used NetBank before, your login details are the same.

  2. 2
Open the account you want to export from

Click on the account name from your accounts overview to open the transaction list.

  3. 3
Click "Export" near the top of the transaction list

The export button sits above the transaction list, usually alongside a filter or search option. It may appear as a download icon depending on your browser size.

  4. 4
Set your date range and choose your format

You can set a From and To date. For format, choose CSV if you want to open it in Excel or Google Sheets. OFX works for Xero, MYOB, and Quicken. QIF is an older format, mostly for legacy accounting software.

  5. 5
Click Export and save the file

The file downloads immediately. Open it in Excel or import it into your accounting software.

What the CSV file actually contains

CommBank's CSV export includes: date, amount, description, and running balance. The columns are straightforward and import cleanly into Excel and Google Sheets without much cleanup.

One thing worth knowing: debit amounts appear as negative numbers and credits as positive. If you're importing into accounting software, check how it handles this before assuming the sign convention matches what the software expects.

Date range limits

NetBank technically allows you to set a custom date range going back years. In practice, exports beyond 12 months often fail silently or time out, particularly for accounts with high transaction volumes. CommBank doesn't document a hard limit, but many users find 12 months is the reliable ceiling for CSV exports.

For anything older, your only option through NetBank is to download monthly PDF statements from the Statements section (separate from the transaction export). These go back further but aren't importable directly into a spreadsheet.

Need CommBank data older than 12 months?

Download your monthly PDF statements from NetBank's Statements section, then convert them in seconds. Our CommBank converter handles multiple PDFs at once — a full financial year done in one go, not a weekend of manual copying.

Credit card accounts

The export process for CommBank credit cards is slightly different. In NetBank, navigate to your credit card account and look for the download or export option within the credit card transaction view. The same format options apply (CSV, OFX, QIF), though the CSV column layout may differ slightly from transaction accounts.

If you're trying to export a CommBank credit card statement for EOFY or accounting purposes, the PDF statement route tends to be more reliable for complete history.

Opening the CSV in Excel

Double-clicking the downloaded file usually opens it correctly in Excel. If the data appears in a single column rather than separate columns, the file may need to be imported rather than opened directly:

  1. In Excel, go to Data > From Text/CSV
  2. Select the downloaded file
  3. Set the delimiter to Comma
  4. Click Load

Google Sheets handles CommBank CSVs without any issues. Use File > Import and select the file.

Frequently asked questions

How far back can I download CommBank transactions as CSV?

NetBank allows a custom date range, but exports reliably fail beyond 12 months for most accounts. If you need older data, download monthly PDF statements and convert them.

Can I export CommBank transactions from the app?

No. The CommBank mobile app doesn't have a CSV or spreadsheet export option. You need NetBank on a desktop browser.

What formats does CommBank support for export?

CSV, OFX, and QIF. CSV for Excel or Google Sheets. OFX for Xero, MYOB, or Quicken. QIF for older accounting software.

My CommBank export is blank or the file is empty. What's wrong?

This usually happens when the date range is too large, or when there are no transactions in the selected period. Try narrowing the date range to 3 months at a time. If it's still blank, try a different browser or clear your cache.

Still need older CommBank data?

If NetBank's CSV export doesn't go back far enough, grab your PDF statements and run them through our converter. Every transaction lands in a clean spreadsheet — multiple months processed at once, ready for Excel, Xero, or your accountant.
